Consider a Move to the Cloud
Right now, in the small to medium sized entrprise space there are three phases
that any given organization's IT infrastructure colud be at:
- New Infrastructure Setup
- In Production (On Cruise)
- Time for Updating
In the first and last phases above these organisations will be looking at their
Servers, Networks and Workstations and evaluating their prurchase or replacment.
The normal proces would be deciding on the specification of your new Servers and
then a large capital outlay to purchase the hardware and software, a big
investment and then a depreciation of this capital equipment over the course of
3 to five years, typically.
An IT infrastructure takes some looking after, so there are ongoing associated
mantenance and support costs to consider as well. Also you have the "big shocks"
associated with equipment crashes, virus attacks etc.
Now There is Another Option...
The much-hyped "Cloud" has arrived! What is it? With high speed internet
connections and the ability to remotely work on computer desktops just as if you
were sitting in front of them the opportunitry exists to completely dispense
with all that expensive, depreciateing hardware and software and effectively rent
space on servers hosted on the internet. This changes the finacial model form a
capital purchase to regualar fees for rental.
Picture this; If you move your IT to the cloud, your offices only need a simple
network, an internet connection and some very low cost
thin-client devices to
have the same productivity as if you had expensive servers, backup systems,
firewalls, PCs etc.
Hosted Virtualized Desktop Providers
Why is this so? With "cloud computing", you "virtualize" your servers and your
PCs. You have a simple terminal that is basically a local screen, keyboard and
mouse, but it connects over the internet to a "Virtual PC" with all the
processing being done at the other end. This Virtual PC in turn connects to your
virtual server. The guys who are hosting your virual server and virtual
PCs take care of all the backup, virus protection and IT administration for you!
Al you pay is a monthly fee based on thew number of virtual PCS, Virtual
Servers, Mailboxes, Software applications etc. Predictable reguar outlay, no
"big shocks" as can happen when servers crash etc.
Think of this, even when your existing PC are at the end oftheir useful life,
they can gain a new lease of life as a simple terminal which connects to your
fast shiny new Virtualized PC! The old PC can very easily cope with the very
modest demand of running a remote desktop or browser connection to your Hosed
Virtual Desktop.
Software and Computers as a Service
That pretty much sums it up! Simply put, right now you might buy your computers
and the software applications as a package product you install on your premises;
with the cloud you buy computing power and applications as a service for a
regular fee base on usage.
